How to choose the right washable rug
-
Check the care label — “machine-washable,” “hand-wash only,” or “spot clean” makes all the difference.
-
Material first — for heavy use choose polypropylene or polyester blends; for natural-fibre preference, check if cotton is machine washable.
-
Pile height — low pile or flatweave = easier to wash and dryer-friendly.
-
Backing & slip-resistance — choose rugs with a washable non-slip backing or plan to add a machine-washable rug pad or a separate non-slip mat.
-
Size & washing method — measure your washing machine drum if you plan to machine-wash. If it’s too big, choose a rug that can be washed in sections or choose a smaller size.
-
Colourfastness — look for labels indicating colourfastness and wash in cold water initially to test.
-
Purpose & placement — hallway, kids’ room, kitchen, and entryway rugs have different needs (durability vs. softness).
